Libbie Custer

Elizabeth 'Libbie' Custer, the wife of the famous general, in 1860/1865. She was a talented writer who wrote many articles and books praising the 'glory' of her husband...

  1. Elizabeth "Libby" Custer was an absolutely gorgeous woman. Every picture of her shows the same thing, and photos weren't usually terribly flattering, then. I think her story is sad; especially that she never had any children. She probably thought there was something wrong with her, but it could just as well have been her husband who was infertile. Even though her husband sounds a bit like a pompous ass, from everything I've seen about him, it is nice to hear about how in love they were. I am a firm believer in the adage that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. That's especially true when the end of the relationship is the death of one, and not that one rejects the other. Heartbreak from death is bittersweet. Heartbreak from rejection is just bitter.

    1. Thank you Noelani! She was gorgeous indeed, and her husband may have been pompous, but probably also passionate. She followed him to every assignment, she must have led quite an interesting life. It's also sad, knowing that she was dressed in black for the remainder of her life after her husband was killed.
