Gramophone

Thomas Edison conceived the principle of recording and reproducing sound between May and July 1877 as a byproduct of his efforts to "play back" recorded telegraph messages and to automate speech sounds for transmission by telephone.

Edison's phonographs recorded onto a cylinder. Emile Berliner patented his Gramophone in 1887. The Gramophone involved a system of recording using a disc. The disc could be easily mass produced by molding and stamping, and required less storage space for a collection of recordings. Through experimentation, in 1892 Berliner began commercial production of his disc records, and "gramophones" or "talking-machines".

From the mid-1890s until the early 1920s both phonograph cylinder and disc recordings and machines to play them on were widely mass-marketed and sold. The disc system gradually became more popular due to its cheaper price and better marketing by disc record companies. Edison ceased cylinder manufacture in the autumn of 1929, and the history of disc and cylinder rivalry was concluded.

Zouave 2nd Division, Portrait of Roger Fenton

Roger Fenton was particularly keen to show the ethnic diversity in the allied camp during the Crimean War (1853-1856): Croats, Egyptians, Macedonians, Zouaves and Algerian infantrymen. He had himself photographed (in 1855) by his assistant Marcus Sparling, in a Zouave uniform, an infantry brigade created in 1831 in Algeria which distinguished itself during the Crimean War.

Prince Henry

Prince Henry of the Netherlands (prins Hendrik) (1820-1879). Brother of king William III of the Netherlands. Hoping to produce an heir to the throne he married 22 year old princes Marie of Prussia in 1878. The marriage remained childless. He had a long maritime career and therefore he is often referred to as Henry the Seafarer

Carte De Visite

The carte de visite (CDV) was a type of small photograph the size of a visiting card. It was a thin paper photograph mounted on a thicker paper card. The size of a carte de visite ia card sized 2½ × 4 inches. It was enormously popular in the 1850s and 1860s. People were not only buying photographs of themselves, but also buying and trading photographs of celebrities among friends and visitors.

Maude Fealy - Romeo & Julia (1898/1903)

Maude Fealy (1883-1971) was an American stage and film actress. She appeared in her first movie in 1911. The postcard shows most likely Maude as Juliet from "Romeo & Juliet" (1898/1903).
