Gargoyles in Amersfoort

The Amersfortian sculptor Ton Mooy, who I have mentioned in an earlier post, also made several gargoyles. These are shown at the walls of the canals in the inner city.

A gargoyle is a carved stone grotesque with a spout designed to convey water.

Ton Mooy in his atelier:


  1. Very interesting. This fellow has a lot of talent! What a beautiful blend of modern and classic style.

  2. He's certainly talented! Unfortunately due to the current crisis no money is available anymore for these kind of decorations...

  3. Let's hope things get better and he can continue with the tradition. I'd hate to think they'd use boring old pipes instead of a piece of art.
