Alfred Stevens - In The Country

Alfred Stevens (1823-1906): 'In The Country', ca. 1867 (private collection).

next episode: ?

  1. A lovely painting, I wonder if there is a meaning to the lady wearing only one glove and having her other hand showing. It may have been a little revealing for the time.

  2. In the background there is a (love?) letter (with a rose) on the park bench. She must have read it, hence the hand without a glove. I wonder if the message was good or bad (she doesn't look that happy).

She is just thinking, I imagine. In case of "unhappiness", she wouldn't handle her umbrella in that way :-)
