Captain Jasper Hall of the 4th (King's Own) Regiment of Foot near a flagpole (Roger Fenton, 1855).
This site displays some letters written by Captain Jasper Hall to his father and sister whilst serving in the Crimea. Among many other things he writes about some of the ‘trophies’ he has collected to send home including a flag, ‘...you must keep it for me, I intend it some day to cover my wife’s piano and keep the dust from it”.

Oh my what a trophy indeed! That is quite an amazing photo, and how grand it is that during such a time as that he thinks of his wife's piano and keeping dust from it!
ReplyDeleteLetters like his make the war seem very real, not just bland history. Good post.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic photo! And to think that he had plans to place it where he could see it everyday. I know that victory is sweet, but I'm not sure that I would like to be reminded of the battlefield everytime I walked into the parlour!
