Mary of Burgundy

Mary of Burgundy (1457-1482) by Michael Pacher, ca. 1490 (Heinz Kisters Collection, Kreuzlingen)

Mary of Burgundy (1457–1482) ruled the Burgundian territories in the Low Countries.

As a single child she inherited the Duchy of Burgundy after her father's death at the Battle Of Nancy in 1477. Later that year she married Archduke Maximilian of Austria, who became her co-ruler. Five years later, during falconing with Maximilian near Wijnendale Castle, her horse tripped, threw her, and then landed on top of her, breaking her back. She died several days later.
